How inattentional blindness causes motorcycle accidents

Inattentional blindness is an issue that sometimes comes up when people are quickly looking at the scene around them. They do not really take the time to focus on the details.

This is common, and the human brain has a way to deal with it. It identifies the most important things in a person’s field of vision and focuses on them. It will then fill in the gaps with things that the person expects to see, sometimes glossing over the real details. Unless the person slows down and takes more time to focus, they are not actually seeing everything, even if they are looking at it.

Overlooking motorcycles

In terms of motorcycle accidents, inattentional blindness can become a problem when a driver is turning or pulling out onto the road. Ideally, they should come to a stop, check for cross traffic, and only turn when it is safe to do so.

But what if that driver just quickly looks back and forth, not taking the time to really focus on the details? This can lead to inattentional blindness, and, if the driver is not expecting to see a motorcycle, they may overlook it entirely.

Additionally, motorcycles are much smaller than other motor vehicles. Sometimes, a driver will look straight at a motorcycle, fail to see it, and then cut the bike off as they execute their turn, leading to a severe accident. The driver may even be confused that the bike “came out of nowhere”, when the reality is that it was there the whole time.

Seeking compensation

Motorcyclists face many risks from the drivers around them. Those who have suffered severe injuries in a crash may deserve compensation for medical bills, lost wages and other such damages.
