Distracted driving can lead to catastrophic vehicle crashes

=Drivers are always expected to be able to give their full attention to their driving duties. They need to ensure they can comply with applicable traffic laws and react to anything that happens around their vehicle.

One thing that can have a negative impact on a person’s ability to drive is being distracted. A distraction is anything that takes the driver’s attention away from their driving duties. This can involve taking their mind off driving, hands off the steering wheel or eyes off the road.

Why are distractions so dangerous?

Distractions are dangerous because crashes can occur quickly. A vehicle that’s moving at a speed of 55 miles per hour (mph) will go 100 yards in just five seconds. It takes an average of five seconds to read a text message, which means that a driver who’s doing that will go the full length of a football field before they look at the road again if they’re moving at 55 mph.

Vehicles that are moving faster have a higher chance of a catastrophic crash occurring. The same is true if the vehicle is on a busy road. Even at lower speeds, vehicle occupants can suffer serious injuries if they’re struck by a distracted driver.

Any victims of distracted driving crashes should ensure they get proper medical care. They may opt to pursue a compensation claim to help them cover those expenses, as well as others related to the wreck. Because of time limits built into law, swift action is critical after this type of crash occurs.
