Driving can be hazardous even at the best of times. However, the dangers road users face increase exponentially when there is an aggressive driver within the vicinity. Some studies suggest that aggressive driving is a factor in approximately 50% of all fatal accidents.
It’s not easy knowing what to do when faced with an aggressive driver. However, there are a few things that you can do to increase your safety.
Don’t rise to it
People often act out aggressively in the hope of getting a response. It’s important that you don’t take this bait. No good can come out of acting aggressively in return. This will only serve to escalate an already dangerous scenario. Focus on trying to stay composed and then you can move on to getting away from the situation.
Let them pass
If the aggressive driver wants you to get out of the way, then it’s best to do so if it’s safe. You’re not in a race after all and it’s far better to arrive at your destination a few minutes later and still in one piece.
Take a break
A road rage incident can be very traumatic and you may need some time to get your bearings. Consider pulling over at the next feasible stop to gather your thoughts. Go for a coffee or take a walk around. You’ll soon notice that you begin to calm down. Then, you’re ready to get on with your journey again.
Aggressive driving is unacceptable and if you’ve been injured by someone behaving this way, then you can hold them to account. Equip yourself with some legal guidance and find out what your options are.
